Thanksgiving Eve watch and listen

Image
I t is the night before Thanksgiving and all through the house not a person was hungry- not even a mouse. All watched the clock on the oven click down- for they knew at zero a roast turkey would be found. And with would come mash potatoes and beans and culinary delights fit for the Queen. Some stuffing, cranberries and a sweet potato or two- these foods would be eaten and consumed by the next day at 2. And to top it off a pumpkin pie would be sliced then dolloped with whipped dream to top off Thanksgiving night. But now we all wait for the turkey to arrive And now watch and listen to what some people have contrived To commemorate this ole holiday of thanks. Years ago I wrote a Thanksgiving program for the college radio station in Morris, MN. A Kumm Thankgiving Pageant Then watch Charlie brown putter his way through Thanksgiving I must admit this Charlie Brown special is kinda of corny in the set-up. It not the best but it certainly is not the least. And it is one of th...

Wonderful love, a summer day

Image
Portrait of my friends A summer day in the park. Just going there. No jogging. No swimming. But sun. Yes sleep. And the Frisbee. Near the lake. by the bench. Nothing planned or devised. Yawning restful day. Sun reflecting off the lake. Closed eyes. Again Frisbee wisking by. Nawing hunger pangs. Awake and glance Ah at last The pizza and the pop Laugh then eat and laugh some more Fuller but spent Pick up then go Frisbee follows.

On Memorial Day 2011

Image
The poppy has been a popular symbol used around Memorial Day in the States and in the UK and perhaps elsewhere. The VFW distributes them yearly. I don't know if they are sold or what. I haven't seen that many around my neck of the woods for years. I have an old one I keep on hand. The VFW website explains it. Although all veterans are often honored on this holiday, it was originally for those men and women who died in the Civil War. I think I mentioned this in last years Memorial Day post. The poppy symbol, however, is from WWI, a war my great uncle served in. I am told he had to alter his age in order to enlist. Eventually he did such a good job the Government asked him back for WWII. I believe he was a boiler maker of some kind. I think he was in the Pacific during WWII. Now a poem: Remember now the smoke and grime Battering and bellowing towards the line Stand did they, when came their time Refusing to relinquish but for Liberty to shine. These things were d...

Coney Dogs

Image
The coney dog- beef hot dog, all meat chili, yellow onions, yellow mustard. I also included some yellow relish but you can really see it. The coney dog did not originate on New York's Coney Island. It in fact had its humble begins in Detroit, Michigan. I have eaten the coneys That were on the counter And which you were most definitely  saving for lunch Leave it to me For they were so delicious So juicy and so filling (much thanks to W.C.W )

A new year is upon us

Image
G oodbye 2009 with all its problems and recession or depression. So long to all its murky moments and deaths Obama-rama thriller killer seeker flooded tiger cheater balloon boy hoaxionage bailout fallout health care messes economic recesses Farewell aughts, we've been good friends mostly Now the twenty-teen days are fast upon In with the retro and out with the new- I don't know which to eschew Let's go back to those much better days When we knew there would be- well, better days W ith that Royce Files say "Adeiu" to 2009 but not before I make rememberance of the wall of snow which plagued my return. At left you see the neighboring garage but it looks similar yet mine was a bit higher by right of exaggeration. Highlights of 2009 as the Royce Files saw it- The Great Flood had the most attention for the year and help propel the blog to historic entry levels after a slow start to the year. Not much Obama coverage. Others could do much better at praising o...
